Be There or Be Square: 2019 Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival and the 11th VWSF

(By YuLe; Photos by Richard Sun, Lilian, Bosheng Xie,Jeff Jiang,Lei Song and Lu Cheng) The press conference for the 2019 Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival & the 11th Vancouver Water Splashing Festival was successfully hold at Burnaby City Hall on June 27th, hosted by Canadian Community Service Association (CCSA), organized by Chinese Construction and Renovation Association of Canada (CCRAC) and HelloButler.com.



There were more than 100 people from the three-level political representatives, representatives of the Chinese Consulates, various enterprises and institutions, community organizations, media friends and people from all walks of life took the time out of their busy schedules to attend the press conference.



The press conference started with the welcome speech by Mayor Mike Hurley and Councillor James Wong, City of Burnaby. They thought highly about the Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival, they welcomed all to come to Burnaby, the one of the most multicultural cities in Canada with 100+ languages and 100+ ethnicities. They announced the “Chinese Cultural Heritage Week” 2019 from July 22 to July 28, and the 2019 Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival & the 11th Vancouver Water Splashing Festival would be taken place on July 28th at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. Mike Hurley, the mayor of Burnaby, is also an excellent band player. He’s invited by the organizing committee to perform at the festival.

Harris Niu, President of Canada Community Service Association, the festival host, introduced the history of Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival, and how it becomes the biggest Chinese cultural event in Canada.He also sent his heartfelt thanks to city of Burnaby, to all the contributors, and he welcomed more people to join the Chinese Cultural Heritage as well as multiculturalism celebration.



Kong Weiwei, Deputy Consul General of Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Vancouver praisedBurnaby as a great city, and the Chinese Canadian population in Burnaby is the second largest only next to Europeans. He expressed warm congratulations to the Chinese Traditional Culture Festival and Water Splashing Festival 2019. Through a series of activities, the Canadian Community Service Association has become an important contributor to Canada's multicultural communities, and he wished the event a great success.



MP Peter Julian said that his wife was from Shandong, China, he was very aware of the important contribution from the Chinese Canadian community. Without the contribution of Chinese Canadians, there probably would be no BC in Canada today. He sent his sincere thanks to the City of Burnaby for their support and the Canadian Community Service Association for successfully hosting the annual Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival and the Water Splashing Festival. Subsequently he presented a congratulatory letter to Harris Niu, representing Canada Community Service Association.



MLA Anne Kang, the Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors, said that such a traditional cultural festival has enabled third-generation immigrant like her to find the "root of culture" and hope that the next generation would do the same; she praised the Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival is now more than just a "Chinese" culture festival, but also a festival of "diverse" cultures.



Kenny Gu, the President of the organizers of Chinese Construction and Renovation Association of Canada and HellobButler.com, sent his sincere thanks the City of Burnaby for their support and thanks to the Canadian Chinese Building Decoration Association, HelloButler.com and all the organizing committee members. He also showed the site map for the Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival. He encouraged everyone to join hands and successfully hold this Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival and Water Splashing Festival to further spread Chinese traditional culture, further promote cultural exchanges and economic and trade cooperation, further strengthen exchanges and cooperation between ethnic groups and communities, and further promote the development of multiculturalism in Canada.



Max Cui, Honorable Chair for the Organizing Committee, said that Burnaby is the most suitable place to host the Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival and the Water Splashing Festival. The number of participants has been increasing significantly year by year, which is a good proof. The organizing committee provides more and more activities every year, meets more and more friends from multicultural backgrounds, showcases Chinese traditional culture and builds bridges connecting Chinese culture and multicultural communities.



Xue Haiqing, Co-Chair for the Organizing Committee sent his thanks to all the contributors, those who made the very successful Chinese Cultural Heritage Festivals and the Water Splashing Festivals year after year; he has been honored to be the co-chair for the recent years, and he wished another huge success for Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival 2019 and the 11thWater Splashing Festival.



Liu Ti, the Director of the festival, said that she was very happy that this festival has been getting bigger and better. She sent her thanks to the organizing committee, and in particular she thanked the organizers: Chinese Construction and Renovation Association of Canada (CCRAC), and HellobButler.com; she was grateful that new teams have been keeping to join the organizing committee every year, and she wished a complete success for the coming events.



Wang Yuanlong, Vice President of Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver, said that just like the Chinese New Year Parade, which has been hosting by Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver and 5 other associations, the Chinese Culture Heritage Festival conveys an important message: as Chinese Canadians, we love Canada and we are willing to contribute to the multicultural development in Canada, we are willing to further promote the trade and cultural exchanges; we were gathered there, we were a team, and we wish the event a complete success.



Chris Dong, Principal of Chinese Ambassadors and Michael Keller, Marketing Manager of Burnaby Hospital Foundation said that they were very pleased that Burnaby Hospital Foundation was a charity recipient of the Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival and the 11th Water Splashing Festival; they were very pleased to receive $5,000 donation from Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival 2018, and they hope to further strengthen cooperation with Chinese communities and multicultural communities. They also introduced the detailed community services of the Chinese Ambassadors Group and the Youth Ambassadors Group.



When responding to reporters' questions, Paul McDonell, City Councillor of Burnaby, also emphasized the important contribution of Chinese Canadians made to Canadian railways; he emphasized that Chinese Canadian were one of Canada's founders.



At the end of the press conference, the organizing committee presented a calligraphy paper fan with “Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival” wording to the Burnaby City Councils. The paper fan was made by Zhang Yiyuan, the young calligrapher, the founder of Element Education, the board director of Canada Community Service Association, WS Immigration and Multicultural Service Association and other non-profit organizations.



Sophia Xinyuan Zhang, communication manager, also a board director for Canada Community Service Association; Chair of WS Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society hosted this press conference and organized it together with the organizing committee.

The annual Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival and the Water Splashing Festival is the largest event in Canada to promote Chinese traditional culture, and has been receiving great support from the Canadian three-level governments and the Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver.


The 2019 Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival, the 11th Vancouver Water Splashing Festival, supported by City of Burnaby, hosted by Canadian Community Service Association (CCSA), organized by Chinese Construction and Renovation Association of Canada (CCRAC) and HelloButler.com, will be held at the Swangard Stadium in Burnaby on July 28, 2019 from 10am to 5pm.


It will also be the Grand Celebration for the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China while we celebrate 2019 Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival and the 11th Vancouver Water Splashing Festival.

The “2016 Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival and the 8th Vancouver Water Splashing Festival” with around 14,000 participants. The 2017 one reached nearly 20,000 participants. The 2018 one reached to more than 25, 000 participants. It is expected that the number of participants for this year will also increase substantially.


As always, the 2019 Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival and the 11th Vancouver Water Splashing Festival will hold a formal plaque ceremony.


On top of the traditional five major theme activities “Connecting - the past time, Unique - folk artists, Song and Dance - traditional arts, Food - China Taste, Water Splashing Festival - traditional festival”, this year we are having 5 more major features:


1. The distribution of the six major theme activities is more reasonable. This year, it will increase to 100 booths, including Kids Zone, Health Care Zone, Consulting Zone, Home Building Materials Zone, Dining Area and Comprehensive Zone.
2. The Kids Zone will increase and the activities will be more attractive: Kids Zone will have children's educational training programs, parent-child activities, etc. There are 16 booths. In addition to the traditional toys like the past years, the Kids Zone has added more attractive entertainment facilities. 
3. The Dining Zone will increase to 15 booths to ensure that everyone can enjoy the food, more importantly, more traditional Chinese food will be served;
4. Tug-of-War Competition: 12 people per team, the final female team and male team will win a prize of $1,000 Canadian dollars each;
5. Song and Dance programs will highlight the theme of celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
